Exploring the Planet's Most Ghostly Forest: Contorted Trees, UFOs and Spooky Stories in Transylvania.

"People refer to this location a mysterious vortex of Transylvania," remarks an experienced guide, his breath forming wisps of vapor in the crisp night air. "Countless individuals have disappeared here, many believe it's an entrance to a parallel world." The guide is leading a visitor on a nocturnal tour through what is often described as the world's most haunted grove: Hoia-Baciu, a section spanning 640 acres of ancient local woods on the outskirts of the Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

Centuries of Mystery

Accounts of unusual events here date back a long time – this woodland is named after a regional herder who is said to have vanished in the long ago, together with 200 of his sheep. But Hoia-Baciu gained global recognition in 1968, when a defense worker known as Emil Barnea photographed what he described as a UFO floating above a oval meadow in the centre of the forest.

Numerous entered this place and vanished without trace. But no need to fear," he states, facing his guest with a grin. "Our excursions have a flawless completion rate."

In the time after, Hoia-Baciu has drawn yoga practitioners, shamans, ufologists and supernatural researchers from across the world, curious to experience the mysterious powers believed to resonate through the forest.

Contemporary Dangers

It may be among the planet's leading destinations for paranormal enthusiasts, the forest is under threat. The western districts of Cluj-Napoca – an innovative digital cluster of a population exceeding 400,000, described as the Silicon Valley of eastern Europe – are advancing, and real estate firms are pushing for approval to clear the trees to build apartment blocks.

Except for a limited section housing area-specific oak varieties, this woodland is not officially protected, but Marius believes that the company he was instrumental in creating – a dedicated preservation group – will assist in altering this, persuading the authorities to acknowledge the forest's importance as a tourist attraction.

Chilling Events

When small sticks and autumn leaves split and rustle beneath their footwear, the guide recounts numerous folk tales and alleged paranormal happenings here.

  • One famous story describes a five-year-old girl vanishing during a family picnic, only to reappear five years later with no recollection of what had happened, having not aged a single day, her attire lacking the smallest trace of dust.
  • Regular stories explain cellphones and photography gear unexpectedly failing on venturing inside.
  • Reactions include complete terror to moments of euphoria.
  • Various visitors state seeing strange rashes on their skin, perceiving unseen murmurs through the woodland, or sense hands grabbing them, although convinced they're by themselves.

Study Attempts

While many of the accounts may be impossible to confirm, numerous elements before my eyes that is undeniably strange. Everywhere you look are vegetation whose stems are curved and contorted into fantastical shapes.

Different theories have been given to clarify the abnormal growth: powerful storms could have shaped the young trees, or naturally high radioactivity in the ground cause their unusual development.

But formal examinations have found no satisfactory evidence.

The Notorious Meadow

Marius's tours enable visitors to participate in a little scientific inquiry of their own. As we approach the opening in the forest where Barnea captured his famous UFO images, he hands the visitor an electromagnetic field detector which detects energy patterns.

"We're stepping into the most energetic area of the forest," he comments. "Try to detect something."

The plants suddenly stop dead as we emerge into a perfect circle. The single plant life is the low vegetation beneath our feet; it's obvious that it hasn't been mown, and looks that this strange clearing is natural, not the work of human hands.

The Blurred Line

This part of Romania is a location which stirs the imagination, where the line is blurred between truth and myth. In traditional settlements superstition remains in strigoi ("screamers") – undead, shapeshifting creatures, who return from burial sites to terrorise local communities.

The famous author's renowned vampire Count Dracula is always connected with Transylvania, and the historic stronghold – a medieval building situated on a rocky outcrop in the Transylvanian Alps – is heavily promoted as "the vampire's home".

But even folklore-rich Transylvania – literally, "the territory after the grove" – feels tangible and comprehensible compared to the haunted grove, which appear to be, for reasons radioactive, environmental or entirely legendary, a nexus for creative energy.

"Inside these woods," the guide states, "the boundary between fact and fiction is very thin."
