Explosion Takes 3 Carabinieri While Executing Eviction Action in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
Sequence of Events
The explosion occurred as police and firefighters approached the property near the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.
The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman got detained at the site and a third person who ran away after the explosion was apprehended soon after. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.
The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location revealed the property reduced to a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to debts accrued by the three owners.
Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents triggered the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander informed news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the explosion included eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor believed the explosion had taken place on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed local news, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
