Stokes Claims Six Scalps in English Ashes Preparation Match

Tour match, Lilac Hill (first day of 3)

Development squad 382: Jacks 84, McKinney 67; Ben Stokes 6-52

England XI: yet to bat

Ben Stokes achieved 6 scalps in his return to play after July but the tourists faced an injury concern involving fast bowler Wood on the opening day of their Test preparation against England Lions in Perth.

Captain's Outstanding Return

Stokes, making his comeback after nearly four months away with a shoulder problem, delivered sixteen overs across three spells for his 6-52 versus England Lions – all to catches taken on the leg side.

Mark Wood's Fitness Worry

Fast bowler Wood, also making his comeback after 9 months away with a knee injury, bowled a scheduled amount of 8 overs before leaving the field in the afternoon session because of a hamstring problem. He will receive scanning on the following day.

The Wood situation removed the intensity out of the day, as the England Lions were dismissed for 382 on a slow track after an automatic toss at the venue.

Team Planning

England aimed to field first to get overs in their legs before the initial Test match at Optus Stadium, beginning on November 21st.

In a potential indication towards their opening Test strategy, the visiting team selected an fast bowling lineup – four specialists plus Stokes – and omitted spin bowler Bashir in the Lions.

Batting Highlights

Bethell didn't strengthen his claim for selection in the Test side, making only two, but Jacks enhanced his claim to be called upon later in the tour by hitting 84.

McKinney, Cox, teenage Rew and Matthew Potts also made half-centuries.

Low-key Environment

The team's decision to play a single warm-up game against the Lions has been questioned by some former players but Stokes hit back by labeling the critics "past players".

A relaxed opening day in front of a smattering of fans at the ground was definitely a world away from what England will face at a packed main stadium next week.

Captain's Excellent Performance

The captain was superb in the series against the Indian team in the home summer, only to strain himself to injury. He missed the final Test with a shoulder tear.

The skipper has not completed a complete participation in any of England's previous four tours because of different fitness issues and the team's hopes of regaining the Ashes are significantly reduced if he misses any of the five Tests in Australia.

He has been bowling at full pace for 60 days and appeared in good condition on Wednesday, even if he could not comprehend the way in which some of his dismissals were presented.

Will Jacks Strengthens Case

Jacks is unlikely to play in the opening match – England look to have revealed their intentions with the XI selected here. Still, he may have nudged himself in front of the out-of-sorts Bethell with his eighty-four, which came at nearly run-a-ball pace.

Even before the doubt over Wood, the five fast bowlers in the team lineup for this match may not have been the attack for the first Test.

Carse was absent from the first day because of sickness, with his place going to Tongue. Josh Tongue had opening batsman McKinney edging to the keeper just after the break.

Though Stokes took the wickets, Archer impressed observers. He was lively with the new ball and again after lunch, when he discomforted Jacks.

In the omission of Bashir and with Mark Wood departing, Joe Root was required to bowl fourteen overs of his off-spin. It was average performance, conceding 117 at an economy of more than eight.

Root at least took a scalp in the closing stages when Fisher somehow hit a full toss to the fielder before Jofra Archer dismissed with a bouncer Matthew Potts for 53 with the last delivery of the day.
