The Heartbreaking Shift a Single Year Has Brought in the US

Twelve months back, the environment was utterly separate. Before the national election, reflective citizens could recognize the country's significant faults – its injustices and disparity – however they continued to identify it as the US. A democratic nation. A place where constitutional order carried weight. A state led by a dignified and decent official, even with his elderly years and declining health.

Currently, this autumn, many of us scarcely know the land we inhabit. Individuals suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are collected and shoved into vehicles, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the White House – is being torn down to build a lavish dance hall. The leader is persecuting his adversaries or supposed enemies and requesting federal prosecutors hand over a huge total of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are dispatched into American cities on false pretexts. The military command, relabeled the Defense Ministry, has effectively rid itself of regular press examination while it uses potentially totaling nearly $1tn of taxpayer money. Universities, law firms, media outlets are submitting from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are treated like aristocracy.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the edge into authoritarianism and extremism,” an American historian, wrote recently. “Finally, faster than I thought feasible, it transpired in America.”

Every morning starts amid recent atrocities. And it is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we have become, and the speed at which it occurred.

However, it is known that the leader was legitimately chosen. Despite his highly troubling first term and despite the cautions associated with the awareness of the rightwing blueprint – despite the president personally stated openly he intended to act as an autocrat solely at the start – a majority of citizens elected him over the other candidate.

As terrifying as the present situation may be, it's more daunting to realize that we’re only nine months into this administration. How will three more years of this decline leave us? And what if the three years turns into something even longer, since there is not anyone to stop this president from opting that additional tenure is essential, perhaps for defense purposes?

Admittedly, all is not lost. There are legislative votes next year that may establish an alternate balance of power, if Democrats retake one or both houses of the legislature. There are government representatives who are striving to exert some accountability, such as lawmakers that are starting a probe concerning the try to money grab from legal authorities.

And a presidential election in 2028 could initiate our journey toward restoration just as the previous vote placed us on this regrettable path.

There are millions of Americans demonstrating in the streets across municipalities, like they performed in the past days during anti-authority protests.

Robert Reich, wrote recently that “the slumbering force of America is awakening”, just as it did after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or amid anti-war demonstrations or in the Watergate scandal.

In those instances, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.

The author states he understands the signals of that awakening and observes it occurring now. For proof, he cites the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, bipartisan pushback against a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal rejection by reporters to agree to military mandates they only publish authorized information.

“The slumbering entity consistently stays dormant until specific greed becomes so noxious, a particular deed so contemptuous of the common good, specific cruelty so noisy, that it is forced other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate his knowledgeable stance. Maybe he’ll be validated.

In the meantime, the big questions endure: is the US able to regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its standing globally and its adherence to the rule of law?

Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My pessimistic brain tells me that the final scenario is accurate; that all may indeed be finished. My hopeful heart, though, convinces me that we need to strive, by any means possible.

In my case, as an observer of the press, that’s about encouraging reporters to live up, more completely, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For others, it could mean engaging with political races, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to safeguard ballot privileges.

Under twelve months back, we lived in an alternate reality. In the future? Or after another term? The fact is, we are uncertain. All we can do is to attempt to continue fighting.
