A brace by Donyell Malen propelled Aston Villa closer to direct qualification for the last 16 of the Europa League in a match overshadowed of fan disturbances from visiting supporters.
Dutch forward is exemplifying the team's improved strength in depth, but this 10th win in 12 games was tainted by visiting fans destroying stadium seating, hurling missiles at stewards and home team athletes, and clashing with police.
Since the start of the 2023-24 season, no club has secured more continental games at home (thirteen out of fifteen) than the Villa squad. Emery looks a good bet to claim the trophy for a fifth time.
The Swiss fans had contributed to the early vibrant atmosphere before the opening strike. Their orchestrated clapping, drumming, pogoing and chanting lent the afternoon start a feeling of a continental occasion, although the events after each of the early scores was inexcusable by any standards.
Under circumstances reminiscent of other disturbances with their fans in the recent past, the visiting hardcore fans responded to Malen’s headed goal in the first half by throwing plastic cups at the celebrating Villa players, with the goalscorer getting a facial injury.
The Swiss club had been fined a substantial sum by Uefa and ordered to cover damages for destroying seats and toilet blocks in their Champions League visit in a previous season. Additionally, they were further penalized last season for the deployment of flares in their heated European visit.
However, the situation escalated following the second goal moments prior to the break. As the Dutch forward grinned doing a knee-slide in the general direction of the travelling fans, the fans reacted by tearing up seats to throw alongside further projectiles and liquid at the increased presence of security personnel.
Fighting broke out with law enforcement while Loris Benito, team leader, approached to appeal for calm from his club's fans. No fewer than two disruptors were removed by police. There was a five-minute holdup until the match resumed and the half be completed.

It had at least been a very satisfactory period in sporting terms for Villa as they chased a seventh straight victory at their ground. The forward, who had a prompt influence when substituted during the break in a previous match, was selected to lead the attack, among multiple rotations to the team sheet.
How he made the most of his chance, incisive and pacy for all of his hour on the pitch. Marvin Keller had had to tip over his brilliant long-range effort in the fourth minute, and both other players nearly scored before Malen headed in the delivery from a teammate. Villa were so dominant that eight players were part of the move.
The move for the second goal was slightly simpler but no less aesthetically pleasing. A teammate delivered an excellent assist for Malen to take in his stride down the inside-left channel after which he cut back inside a defender and drilled home his sixth goal of the season.
Perhaps Malen should not have celebrated in the visiting supporters’ direction, but the crowd violence was utterly unjustifiable as it was severe.
There was a subdued mood over the next half hour as the away supporters, almost to a man wearing dark attire, refrained from singing. A visiting attacker had a shot saved, and a Villa player was rightly flagged when providing an assist for a simple finish.
But as Villa rang the changes on the hour mark, allowing four of their main players additional rest before the local clash, the away contingent resumed their noise. A taunting chant was the home crowd's retort.
As the visitors did first get the ball in the Villa net, a forward slotting home a cross, there was a protracted video review before the score was ruled out for a positional infringement in the buildup. The assistant referee on the near touchline had shuffled up his line up the field and distanced from the away fans when the decision was given.
During added time, though, a substitute did crack home a late reply, after a diagonal pass, and on this occasion video review upheld Young Boys their brief jubilation.
After all the context to the previous European fixture here, Villa will travel to Switzerland in December hoping for a calm trip and the victory that should safeguard their progress to the last 16 of the tournament.
